Santiago de Afalma

Lisbon, Portugal

Best Urban Hotel in Europe by Condé Nast Johanses.
Santiago de Alfama is a beacon of authenticity in this lovely city of light, Lisboa, with beautiful whimsical views of old Alfama that glide towards the sea, whilst the swallows nest along the nearby rooftops. It is located on Rua de Santiago in the wonderfully nostalgic district of Alfama, immediately below Saint Georges Castle and above the famous viewpoint, Miradouro de Santa Luzia. Alfama is Lisbon's fado district, this music is part of the fabric of this neighborhood. If you listen carefully, you will hear the strum of a mandoline coming from an open window, a fado singer coming down a cobbled street. Its pretty narrow streets date back millennia, some so old that the buildings lean to meet each other, secrets whisper from their ancient walls.
Acclaimed architect Luís Rebelo de Andrade worked with owner Heleen Uitenbroek for almost six years on this project, bringing the 15th-century building back to life, whilst juggling Roman remains preserved walls, and the demands of a 21st-century five-star hotel. The result is a brilliant blend of authenticity – from flagstones to stucco work – and luxury. Modern art by Sandra Baia hangs on ancient walls, and floors are tiled in a motif that is repeated throughout the hotel, from the pillowcases to the menu cards.
This is a family-owned, family-run hotel, which brims with the feel of a warm and welcoming private house, an atmosphere that brings people back time and time again. It is particularly popular with celebrities who can go under the radar here.
