Chef Melissa Kelly, the Executive Chef and owner of Primo, clinched the James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef: Northeast in 2013, sponsored by American Express. Notably, she had previously secured the same award in 1999, marking her as the inaugural two-time recipient of this prestigious accolade. Over the past two decades, Melissa has dedicated herself to expanding Primo's farm, spanning nearly 5 acres. What began with a greenhouse, 2 acres of organic gardens, and 2 pigs has transformed into a comprehensive operation featuring broiler and layer chickens, ducks, guinea hens, and 9 pigs. During peak seasons, approximately 80% of the ingredients utilized in the Primo Kitchen are sourced directly from the farm. The decision to establish a restaurant in Maine was propelled by the state's status as the home of the largest Farmer and Garden Association and its proximity to the coast, providing access to fresh seafood. Melissa characterizes the availability of ingredients straight from the Primo farm as "the ideal way to cook."
