From gorgeous beaches and eclectic architecture, to quaint fishing villages and renowned vineyards, Portugal is culture-rich and brims with old-world charm. On this journey, we focus on the countryside, the farms, and the wineries of Alentejo and Douro. Porto and Lisbon are, of course, also included. Alongside Roman stones and medieval convents, Lisbon boasts exquisite tile work on every corner. Alentejo personifies a history immersed in periods of unrest and bonanzas and is a land where culture and tradition go hand in hand. Envisage rolling plains filled with cork trees and honest people, proud of Alentejo. Further north, we unveil the secrets of the Douro Valley. With majestic riverbanks sculpted by centuries of vineyard cultivation, the valley is the world's oldest wine-producing region and is home to a famous port wine. Downriver, Porto is a tightly-clustered assortment of colorful tumbledown houses, soaring bell towers, and stately Baroque churches. Accompany us on this riveting journey back through time and feast your senses!

Mid-morning, we embark on a lengthy but fascinating journey to Douro. En-route we stop at one of Alentejo’s most beautiful villages, Marvao. Located deep in Portugal’s hinterland within a whisker of the Spanish border, Marvao is described as an eagle’s nest hidden in the hills. Its 13th-century walls are still fairly intact and the village is accessed through a narrow medieval archway. We spend time taking it all in as we make our way to a quaint, traditional restaurant, where we enjoy lunch on our own account. We reach Douro late afternoon, in time for a sunset wine tasting at our property and a farm-to-table style dinner prepared by our local chef.

Santiago de Alfama is a beacon of authenticity in this lovely city of light, Lisboa, with beautiful whimsical views of old Alfama that glide towards the sea, whilst the swallows nest along the nearby rooftops. It is located on Rua de Santiago in the wonderfully nostalgic district of Alfama, immediately below Saint Georges Castle and above the famous viewpoint, Miradouro de Santa Luzia. Alfama is Lisbon's fado district, this music is part of the fabric of this neighborhood. If you listen carefully, you will hear the strum of a mandoline coming from an open window, a fado singer coming down a cobbled street. Its pretty narrow streets date back millennia, some so old that the buildings lean to meet each other, secrets whisper from their ancient walls.
Acclaimed architect Luís Rebelo de Andrade worked with owner Heleen Uitenbroek for almost six years on this project, bringing the 15th-century building back to life, whilst juggling Roman remains preserved walls, and the demands of a 21st-century five-star hotel. The result is a brilliant blend of authenticity – from flagstones to stucco work – and luxury. Modern art by Sandra Baia hangs on ancient walls, and floors are tiled in a motif that is repeated throughout the hotel, from the pillowcases to the menu cards.
This is a family-owned, family-run hotel, which brims with the feel of a warm and welcoming private house, an atmosphere that brings people back time and time again. It is particularly popular with celebrities who can go under the radar here.

This estate is charming, cool, modern yet rural, and includes a seven-room farmhouse and winery that is ideal for short or long-term getaways.
Built in 1912, the farmhouse and surrounding vineyards have remained in the same family for many decades. In 2017, the property was renovated by grandson Diogo and wife Marcela. They paid close attention to creating a comfortable and contemporary accommodation, that is in keeping with the spirit of the functioning winery and farm. The estate includes an organic garden that grows an array of vegetables and herbs that are cultivated year round, allowing for consistent farm to table cuisine no matter what the season. The property also features numerous fruit and nut trees, adding to the overall ambience and natural beauty of the surrounds.

This small and quaint property, situated in the heart of the Douro region of Portugal, boasts a farm-to-table restaurant, where a set menu is prepared nightly. Guests are also treated to a daily breakfast of fresh breads, fruits, sliced meats and locally-produced honey; all of which is impeccably presented. An outside terrace overlooking the river is perfect for afternoon lemonade or pre-dinner drinks. Deck chairs around the infinity pool enable sunbathers to enjoy the mountain vistas and the boats cruising down the Douro River. In the evening a family room offers warmth from the fireplace and games for entertainment.
